How to Prepare for a Fashion Shoot

How to Prepare for a Fashion Shoot

What does it take to become a fashion stylist? They make looking fabulous seem so easy, but it’s anything but. If you’ve ever wondered what a stylist does to prepare for a fashion shoot, here’s the inside skinny on what they have to do before the camera starts shooting.

Things You'll Need:

Fashion Rolodex

Cell phone

Digital camera

Polaroid camera and film

Appointment book

Pen

Comfortable shoes

Steam machine

Step
1

A stylist’s job involves lots of trekking around and hauling bags of clothing and accessories to the shoot. Make a list of all the stops needed to pick up all the clothes and accessories from various showrooms and stores.

Step
2

Keep a log of all your contacts to help with the returns after the shoot is over.

Step
3

Once you've picked up everything for the shoot, bring it back to the studio to be organized before transporting it to the shoot. Hang up all the clothes on the clothing racks, and line the shoes up in an orderly manner. Make it easy for the editor and photographer to select the outfits that the models will wear.

Step
4

Once the editors are done with the run-through and have selected all the clothes, shoes and accessories for the shoot, Polaroid the looks and organize them on the rack with the Polaroid attached to the plastic pull-string bag that holds the shoes for each outfit. This organizes the outfits for quick reference at the shoot.

Step
5

Pack up all the clothing and prepare it to be transported to the photo studio.

Step
6

Make sure you organize all the loan sheets in a binder so you can keep track of all the items to help with the returns.

Step
7

At the shoot, hang up all the outfits and organize the shoes underneath the clothing racks that go with each outfit. Line up all the accessories on an adjacent table.

Step
8

Steam out all the clothing to iron out all the wrinkles before the model puts them on.

Step
9

Help dress/undress the models in each of the looks based on what the editor decides will work.

Step
10

At the end of the shoot, pack up all the clothes and accessories.

Step
11

Start the returns and messenger back all the clothes and accessories to the appropriate stores/designers.
